Professionalism has played a huge role in founder Atinuke "Yinka" Bada's career as a model. She truly believes that her commitment to developing her skills has only played part of the role in her success over the past 27 years. Without professionalism, she promises all models that they will not be asked back for shows! Here are Yinka's Do's and Don'ts of modeling:

What To Do As A Model

Be on time for everything.

  • No exceptions! In a fast-paced industry, no one is going to wait for you. If they do, rest assured you won’t get a second chance to make them wait.

Be positive in all situations.

  • Modeling is a difficult career. Your feet may hurt, your fashion director may be demanding, and you may have reasons to not be in a good mood. This is not something you need to bring on set. Instead, show up with positivity and poise. You are there to do a job, so be your best self!

Be prepared for for photo shoots and shows at all times.

  • Sometimes an opportunity comes up quickly! The last thing you want to do is miss the opportunity by being unprepared.

Wear appropriate attire and undergarments.

  • You want to be able to dress quickly for the job. Keep that in mind anytime you’re getting ready.

Be respectful to other models.

  • The fashion industry is notorious for models treating each other poorly. Instead, be kind and respectful, even if they aren’t acting professionally. Don’t let anyone else pull you down!

What To Avoid As A Model

Do not take criticism to heart.

  • It’s easy to receive harsh criticism and let it impact your self worth. Instead, take the critique and treat it as professional feedback. What can you use to improve your skill?

Do not be nervous.

  • When you’re feeling nervous, it will show on your face. Instead, think about positive things, picture yourself in your best moment and focus on those feelings instead.

Do not cancel last minute.

  • As a model, there is a whole team of people who show up for you. The photographer, creative director, stylist, hair stylist, and makeup artist to name a few. When you cancel last minute, that costs valuable time and money for many people.

Do not miss a photoshoot.

  • For the same reasons as above, it is a really bad idea to be a no-show. Remember, you’re a professional who has a job to do. Show up with your best foot forward.

Do not try to take over the photoshoot.

  • It is disrespectful to the photographer and creative director when you try to take over the shoot. Follow direction to the best of your ability and stay true to your unique style, but remember that you are not the one directing the shoot.

Have you succeeded at any of the Do’s? What about stepping into the Dont’s? I hope you can take one or two of these tips to continue improving your skills!
